Live Like a Fruit Fly: The Secret You Already Know Kindle Edition
The Life You Hope for Can Start Today!
Social media has spawned many "cyber philosophers." Quotes from the masters of literature, poetry, political science, fine arts etc…fly around the world wide web like any number of fowl flying south for the winter. “Carpe Diem” or “Seize The Day,” from a Latin poem by Horace, is one of the most famous of these quotes. A really simple quote that seems to escape the daily lives of many people.
Gabe Berman’s book Live Your Life Like A Fruit Fly: The Secret You Already Know, Makes it almost impossible not to grasp the concept of living in the now! His book has the wisdom of many lifetimes. I’ve read several "inward-looking" books in my life but, Gabe’s book is one of the most compelling for me. The reason is in the book's simplicity.
As the musical director for arguably the greatest entertainer in our lifetime, I had a ‘rare air’ view of the genius of simplicity. The ability to make concepts—no matter how layered, simple or complex—feel obvious and easy is a gift not many possess. Anyone who reads this book should feel empowered, motivated and inspired to know the answers to your life’s problems lie in the simple concept of rejecting fear on the basis of living for this moment. Nothing on earth is promised so don’t waste a nanosecond of it on fear. This is the book's concept and it will linger in your psyche and emotional connection long after you’ve read the last word.
I recommend this book for anyone who is serious about elevating to their rightful place in the world. Step into the glory you were born to share with all. If you’ve temporarily lost your way or are just starting on a new path, reading this book will give you the template on how to achieve what can often seem unachievable. Share this knowledge with those you care about and even those you don’t. Giving the gift of insight and highest potential will eventually uplift the whole of humanity.
Happy reading!

Review
What am I supposed to be doing with my life? That's probably the most asked question in the world of New Age. Berman claims to have the answer: stop doubting yourself and live in the moment, like a fruit fly. His cut-to-the-chase syle and chatty tone make this an easy read. Like he says, we already know the things he's telling us, but his says them in a way that makes it seem like we are hearing them for the first time. With chapter titles like Bread Crumbs, Active Appreciation, Clown School, A Quick Lighthearted Break, Bulletproof Vest, Over the Top, Oh No, and The Dreaded Phone Call, flipping through the book will give customers a good idea of what awaits them when they read it. Whether they read the book from beginning to end, or randomly open it to read one section, what readers will find is get-off-the-couch enthusiasm and a good explanation of why that's important. This one is a good quick pick-me-up. (reviewed by Anna Jedrziewski)

Why Live Like a Fruit Fly?
The average life expectancy of an ordinary fruit fly is in the neighborhood of only a few weeks.
As far as I can tell, fruit flies usually don't sit around watching TV. Fruit flies probably don't waste much time on the Internet. Fruit flies rarely worry about their cell-phone minutes. Fruit flies blink out of existence too quickly to go out of their way to be unkind to other fruit flies.
A fruit fly is born and then buzzes around a bit. It attends to its fruit fly agenda and subsequently succumbs to old age before witnessing a single change of season.
This book is about finding peace and happiness although it might not be immediately apparent from the following sentence:
You're dying. You've been dying since the moment you were born.
Wait.
Stop thinking about what might be on the next page. Stop thinking about what you might like for dinner.
Wrap your mind around this for a moment: As you read these words, you're moving closer to the inevitable end. We all are.
I know you're not an idiot. I know on some level you're well aware of your own mortality. But if you're anything like me, you rarely take it into consideration as your days, months, and years just slip away.
Slip away . . .
Life is short for fruit flies and for us as well. You may have your whole life ahead of you, but as you grow older, it seems as though less and less time elapses between birthdays. If you haven't felt this yet, you will.
I was just four years old. It was early in the morning. The sun wasn't even shining through the windows yet. I was wearing a little bathrobe and only had one sock on. I looked pretty cute.
I opened the fridge and fed Chuckles a piece of Munster cheese. Chuckles was my black lab. We had to put him to sleep when I was in the fifth grade.
I blinked and opened my eyes at my high school graduation.
I blinked again and woke up on my thirtieth birthday with fresh wounds from Corporate America. I'm thirty-seven now. Tomorrow I could be sixty.
Unfortunately for some, aging won't be an option. The best-laid plans of mice and men often get severely screwed up. Life is unpredictable. Tsunamis, swine flu, earthquakes, terrorists, magic bullets, spoiled milk . . . you can get hit at any time, from any conceivable angle.
Seize the day.
What does it mean to live like a fruit fly? The hell if I know. I'm joking of course. I just wanted to lighten the mood a bit. But now it's time to enlighten the mood.
Does living like a fruit fly mean you should take whatever money you have and blow it on chocolate because you'll be dead by the end of the week anyway?
No.
Does it mean you should jump out of a plane from 15,000 feet with a hastily packed parachute?
Please don't. Statistics show you'll make it to see many more tomorrows.
But you might not. And people who live like fruit flies are well aware of this. They don't waste time. Every moment counts. Every choice is critical. Fruit flies don't live in the past or the future. They live in the present.
Fruit fly folks strive to love unconditionally. Fruit fly folks pursue their passions with blinders on.
Giving love and doing what they love is their path to peace and happiness.
If we're going to die one day, which seems to be the current trend for all living things, maximizing the warm feelings of peace and pure happiness for all parties involved should be our central ambition.
(By the way, you just read the introduction.I didn't call it the introduction because if you're anything like me, you would have just skipped right over it.)

I had recently read "The Game Of Life and How To Play It" by Florence Shinn. I enjoyed Shinn's read but the material felt a little dated as it was written nearly a century ago. But the concepts within were something I connected with greatly! Berman's book states right in the title...the secret you already know. This does not make the book any less enjoyable as he puts a wonderful new literary spin on concepts I was already familiar with! Without spoiling any specifics, "Live Like A Fruit Fly" is a charming tale of the author's ongoing experience on searching for his destiny...the good, the bad and the ugly of it all. Both successes and failures. I greatly enjoyed the style and layout of the book as if a friend were just telling tales and giving some old fashioned good advice. From funny to sad, heartwarming to heartbreaking. Above all it was very honest with a drop or two of some excellent pop culture references which are always winners in my book. As a reader who has felt the sting of loss, the taste of insecurity and the sheer anxiety of our everyday lives as humans...I was left very inspired at the end of it all.
As we all are, I am chasing the greatness of my own destiny and this book will stay with me as a wonderful pick-me-up bouquet and a great reminder that with a better frame of mind, we all can get there! Thank you for that Gabe. Very much!
This book is about facing the fears we all have, the way real people face them, sweating and worried about what would happen if we fail. But the truth of it is that when we do face those fears we discover it was much ado about nothing. And yet we still say "this was the scariest thing..." People rarely talk about how their thoughts lead to, or away from, fear. OR how that affects their actions. Reading Gabe's self-talk helped me to realize that I'm not the only one with the mind chatter. A dialogue that tries to talk me out of doing something courageous and worthwhile, that all too often keeps me from taking action. A failure that I regret later.
It's not a long book, I admit that. However given the fast pace of my life right now, that is a bonus. And while the short chapters gave me obvious breaks where I COULD put it down, I didn't want to. It held my attention, and kept me up past my normal bedtime. Something that doesn't happen often. I have read a great many 'live in the moment' books, and this one touched something deep within me. Coming at the right moment Live Like a Fruit Fly reached out to lift me up, dust me off and send me out into the world, once again knowing what is truly important in life-each other. It reminds us - life is short - live it vividly.
There is nothing new revealed in this book, except, perhaps, for those who didn't pay attention in high school science, the actual lifespan of a fruit fly. Which is just 10 days. Fruit flies have just 10 days to enjoy their childhoods, sow their oats, settle down, have kids, enjoy their grandkids, and hopefully avoid being unceremoniously swatted or being shuffled off to a fruit fly hospice before, ding ding ding, their time is up. What makes this book stand out from all the rest of the feel better self help books is the premise, tone, and personal style with which the author conveys his message.
Although I can only speak for myself, I think it's safe to say that neither the author nor I know any fruit flies personally. That said, I believe his assumption is correct when he tells his readers that fruit flies make the most of every moment. And so should we. This unique perspective and the author's clever wit make this book a joy to read.
None of us know how long we will be on this lovely planet we call home. Do we really want to be caught in a moment of miserableness watching the bus bear down on us while thinking, "But wait, I never did what I love," "I never told my sweetie I loved him," "I never practiced the golden rule," or "Why didn't I ever try tiramisu?"
Living like a fruit fly is about doing what you love, loving who you are with, doing the right thing, defending those who can't defend themselves, being kind, having empathy, and enjoying to the fullest every moment we are blessed to breathe the sweet air around us.
The book also reveals the dynamics of breadcrumbs, also known as the opportunities that arise with people we may or may not know. Like how after a girl threw up on the back of my coat on an airplane and I missed my shuttle bus to Marin and was overtly sobbing on the cold metal bench, if I hadn't blown my nose and dabbed away my tears, I never would have spoken to the stranger who was sitting a bench away and ten months later married him in a Napa Valley garden. I believe in breadcrumbs. Clearly I believe in miracles.
Tis a magical way that Gabe Berman reminds us to live like a fruit fly. He encourages his readers to take risks and do what they love. Our time here is limited, so we need to make the most of it. That the author can convey this and make us laugh at the same time is simply the sign of an incredibly skilled writer.

Gabe's honest and witty personality takes hold of you from the first pages and doesn't let you go until the very end, and even then you want more because he is brilliantly funny. He becomes that friend that you can listen to for hours and hours over coffee. He doesn't preach about the concepts he is discussing, he brings you into his life and bares his soul to you, sometimes you can see exactly where he is going from the beginning and other times he slowly plants the concept in your mind over time and you have that light bulb in your mind pop on suddenly.
A fun and inspiring read that gets you fired up. I cannot wait for the second Live Like a Fruit Fly :)
Keep following the breadcrumbs Gabe ;)

Live Like a Fruit Fly is different. Firstly, I couldn't put the book down; always keen to get to the next part. Gabe Berman takes you on little journey of every day enlightenment. He bravely shares with his readers, aspects of his own life and what they have taught him, in addition to sharing his thoughts and ideas on life and living in general. Everything Gabe mentions makes sense. You can easily relate to so many aspects of what Gabe speaks about - you will laugh to yourself, you might feel a little sad in some parts; but you will finish the book feeling uplifted, self-motivated and more enchanted about what life may have to offer you.
The message Gabe shares, is to not waste a single moment in your life (and hence live like a fruit fly who only live for a few weeks); and to do all that is good for you and for the people around you, whilst appreciating what you already have and also the wonderful things that can happen to you in your day. You certainly pick up on this from the stories in the book, and the words seem to absorb into your thought processes as you read.
I can't share a favourite part of the book with you; I don't have one. I think the whole book is my favourite, perhaps with some lines and sections being slightly more favourite than others. A friend and I have this habit of opening up books serendipitously and more often than not, we land on the page we need to and read exactly what we need to hear. I will do this with Live Like a Fruit, and I'm sure I will hear exactly what I need to hear, to clear and refocus my mind and to live in the moment.

I know the title states it's "The secret you already know" but I really think a lot of the "wisdom" of the book is basic common sense, and only those who are pretty immature would benefit. I don't wan't to sound too critical, this book could undoubtedly help some people to focus, and maybe change the course of their (young) lives, but as an older person, who has read a number of books in a similar vein, and dealt with come complex issues over the years, when I finished the book, I was left wanting to give the author a motherly hug, rather than thank him for opening my eyes. I have passed the book on to someone who I think could benefit from it, and am awaiting their post-reading -it response.
